WHO defines Cholera as an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

However, Cholera made its first appearance in Nigeria in 1972 and since then has remained a threat to public health in the country.

According to the NCDC,

“Over 1,141 suspected and over 65 confirmed cases of cholera, resulting in over 30 deaths, had been reported from 96 LGA’s in 30 states in Nigeria within January 1 to June 11, 2024”.

Cholera is spread by the ingestion of food contaminated with the faeces of an infected person.

It has a short incubation period, ranging from as short two hours to 5 days after which the symptoms appear in stages;

Moreover, in the early stages of cholera, patients exhibit nausea and vomiting and these could last for a couple of hours.

In the late stage is severe diarrohea and vomiting which could lead to dehydration due to rapid loss of body fluid and salts,

And if not properly attended to could result in organ failure and death.

PREVENTION 

• Only drink water that has been boiled or treated with chlorine or iodine.

• Avoid any street-food, drinks or beverages whose preparation process is questionable.

• Wash fruits and vegetables properly with clean water before eating.

• Cook food properly before eating.

• Ensure that faeces is disposed properly.

• Avoid overcrowded areas.

• Protect against houseflies with nets and cover food properly as they are important mechanical vectors of Cholera.

• Maintain a high level of personal hygiene.

• If you suspect you or a family member has Cholera, commence Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and immediately seek medical attention.

• Vaccination

Nigerians are however concerned as a result of the rising cost of things.

Including the basic commodities and state that the outbreak of Cholera is a testament of Poverty among the people.
